No gas but new connections will be provided, what is the government going to do?

The federal government of Pakistan has been considering the restoration of closed gas connections for a long time. According to information received by Urdu News, on the suggestion of the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Petroleum has sent a proposal to the Prime Minister’s Office, in which it has been recommended to open new gas connections across the country.

Although this proposal has not been officially approved yet, the government’s plan is to mix imported gas with local gas and provide gas to consumers at a moderate price so that the country’s oil and gas sector can achieve economic stability.

In this regard, Urdu News contacted the Ministry of Petroleum and Sui Gas Companies, whose senior officials confirmed that the proposals are there but the final decision is subject to the approval of the Prime Minister. The officials clarified that no decision has been taken in this regard yet and there is no truth in the news circulating on social media.

But the question arises, how will new connections be provided when the country’s gas reserves are already dwindling?

Experts say that a major reason for considering the restoration of gas connections is the temporary improvement in the gas supply in the system.

According to them, in recent months, there has been some balance in the demand and supply of gas in the country, due to which some imported LNG cargoes have also had to be canceled.

On the other hand, Urdu News has also learned that the government is seriously considering this issue despite public pressure and past political promises, as applications for new gas connections have been pending in many areas for years, which is increasing public discontent.

In addition, the government has allocated funds to the Petroleum Division for gas infrastructure in the new fiscal year budget and the government has set a target of issuing more than one lakh domestic, commercial and industrial connections during the coming year.

This decision reflects the government's commitment to improving the energy sector and promoting economic activity.
