Cairo: An Egyptian court has sentenced several Muslim Brotherhood leaders, including 70-year-old former presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Abu al-Fatouh, to life in prison on charges of spreading false news and conspiracy against the state.

According to Lajjira TV, the sentences were handed down in a Cairo court on Sunday. Former Egyptian presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Abul Fattouh, 70, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Muhammad al-Qassas, the party's deputy leader, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, and Muhammad Izzat, a former Supreme Leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, has already been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

It should be noted that human rights groups have repeatedly criticized such collective punishments in Egypt and called on the authorities to ensure a fair trial.

Groups, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, say the arrests and trials of individuals such as Abu al-Fatuh and al-Qisas are part of a government crackdown on dissent involving not only Islamist political opponents but also pro-democracy activists, journalists and online critics.
