NANCY PELOSI LANDS IN MALAYSIA AS CHINA RAGES OVER TAIWAN

KUALA LUMPUR: According to Malaysian state media, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. This was her second stop on an Asian tour that has angered Beijing due to a potential stop in Taiwan.

Beijing has made it clear that it would consider the visit as a significant provocation by issuing repeated warnings.

Prior to meetings with the prime minister and the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Pelosi arrived at a base of the Malaysian air force, according to state news agency Bernama.

Her itinerary also calls for trips in South Korea and Japan after Singapore and Malaysia, but the possibility of a trip to Taiwan has captured the public's attention.

Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is reportedly opposed by President Joe Biden's administration, but White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said she was free to travel wherever she wished.

He told reporters, "The Speaker has the authority to go to Taiwan.

There is no justification for Beijing to create a crisis out of a hypothetical visit that would be in line with long-standing US principles.

Kirby claimed evidence indicating that China was preparing potential military provocations, such as missile launches into the Taiwan Strait or "large-scale" airspace intrusions.

Although Washington does not fear a direct strike, he claimed Pelosi was flying on a military plane, which "raises the stakes of a miscalculation."

Tuesday, the Taiwanese military declared that it was "committed" to protect the island from heightened Chinese threats resulting from a probable Pelosi visit.

Kirby reaffirmed, though, that US policy toward Taiwan had not altered.

This entails backing its self-governing government while diplomatically recognising Beijing as Taipei's superior and opposing either a formal declaration of independence by Taiwan or a coercive takeover by China.

The possibility of a Pelosi visit has received no response from the Taiwanese authorities.

When asked about the visit by reporters on Tuesday, Premier Su Tseng-chang declined to confirm it but praised Pelosi for her backing.

Additionally, Pelosi would arrive to the island on Tuesday evening, visit Tsai the following day, and leave in the afternoon, according to unnamed sources published by the Taiwanese publication Liberty Times.

The 23 million residents of Taiwan have long faced the prospect of invasion, but it has grown more serious under Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Xi cautioned the United States against "playing with fire" on Taiwan during a phone conversation with Biden last week.

A similar visit, according to Zhang Hun, China's ambassador to the UN, would be "extremely risky, highly provocative."

In the event that it does, he declared, "China would take bold and powerful measures to preserve our sovereignty and territorial integrity."

A Pelosi visit would be more public than any in recent memory, despite the fact that American leaders frequently make covert trips to the island to express support.
